Q1DM · Numerical Decision MakingXAT
A shop needs to buy items from one of two suppliers. Supplier A charges ₹40 per item plus a fixed ₹2,000 delivery charge per order. Supplier B charges ₹44 per item with free delivery. For order sizes above how many items is Supplier A cheaper?
Solution
Cost with A = 40n + 2,000; with B = 44n. They are equal when 40n + 2,000 = 44n, so 4n = 2,000 and n = 500. For more than 500 items, A is cheaper (each extra item saves ₹4).
Answer: (B) 500
Q2DM · Numerical Decision MakingXAT
A marketing manager has ₹1,00,000 for advertising. A slot on Channel X costs ₹20,000 and brings 1,500 enquiries; on Channel Y ₹12,000 and 800 enquiries; on Channel Z ₹8,000 and 500 enquiries. At most 3 slots can be bought on any one channel. What is the largest number of enquiries possible?
Solution
X gives the most enquiries per rupee, so take all 3 X slots (₹60,000, 4,500 enquiries). With ₹40,000 left, 3 Y slots (₹36,000, 2,400) leave ₹4,000 unused: total 6,900. Instead 2 Y + 2 Z costs exactly ₹40,000 and gives 1,600 + 1,000 = 2,600: total 7,100. No other combination within ₹1,00,000 does better.
Answer: (C) 7,100
Q3DM · Numerical Decision MakingXAT
Machine P makes 120 units an hour, of which 5% are defective. Machine Q makes 100 units an hour, of which 2% are defective. An order needs 950 good units, and only one machine can be used. Using the faster machine for good units, how many whole hours are needed?
Solution
Good units per hour: P = 120 × 0.95 = 114; Q = 100 × 0.98 = 98. P is faster. In 8 hours P makes 912 good units (not enough); in 9 hours, 1,026. So 9 hours.
Answer: (D) 9
Q4DM · Numerical Decision MakingXAT
A start-up needs someone for coding, design and sales. The candidates and monthly costs are: A (coding, design) ₹70,000; B (sales) ₹40,000; C (coding) ₹35,000; D (design, sales) ₹60,000; E (design) ₹30,000. What is the lowest monthly cost to cover all three skills?
Solution
C (coding) + D (design and sales) = ₹35,000 + ₹60,000 = ₹95,000. Other combinations cost more: C + E + B = ₹1,05,000; A + B = ₹1,10,000; A + D = ₹1,30,000.
Answer: (B) ₹95,000

A shop owner needs a loan of ₹5,00,000 for 2 years. Bank 1 offers simple interest at 10% a year. Bank 2 offers 9% a year compounded annually. How much less interest does the cheaper option cost?
Solution
Bank 1: 5,00,000 × 10% × 2 = ₹1,00,000. Bank 2: 5,00,000 × (1.09² − 1) = 5,00,000 × 0.1881 = ₹94,050. Bank 2 is cheaper by ₹5,950.
Answer: (B) ₹5,950
Q6DM · Numerical Decision MakingXAT
A help desk needs 2 staff from 9 am to 11 am, 4 staff from 11 am to 3 pm, and 2 staff from 3 pm to 5 pm. Each person works one 4-hour shift that starts on the hour. What is the smallest number of staff needed?
Solution
Total staff-hours needed = 2×2 + 4×4 + 2×2 = 24, and each person gives 4 hours, so at least 6. Six works: 2 people 9 am–1 pm, 2 people 11 am–3 pm, 2 people 1 pm–5 pm. Every hour then has exactly the number required.
Answer: (D) 6
Q7DM · Numerical Decision MakingXAT
A café sells 200 cups of coffee a day at ₹100 a cup. Each cup costs ₹40 to make. The owner estimates that every ₹10 cut in price will sell 30 more cups a day. Which price gives the highest daily profit?
A company scores four vendors out of 10 on price (weight 50%), quality (30%) and delivery (20%). V1: 8, 6, 7. V2: 6, 9, 8. V3: 9, 5, 6. V4: 7, 8, 6. Which vendor should be chosen?
A firm has ₹90,000 a month for intern stipends. An intern from College A costs ₹15,000 and completes 5 tasks a week; an intern from College B costs ₹10,000 and completes 3 tasks a week. At most 4 interns can come from College A. What is the largest number of tasks a week?
Solution
College A gives more tasks per rupee (5 per ₹15,000 = 1 per ₹3,000, against 3 per ₹10,000 = 1 per ₹3,333). Take 4 from A (₹60,000, 20 tasks) and use the remaining ₹30,000 for 3 from B (9 tasks): 29 tasks. Fewer A interns gives less, for example 3 A + 4 B = 27.
Answer: (C) 29
Q10DM · Numerical Decision MakingXAT
Hall X costs a flat ₹50,000 and holds up to 300 guests. Hall Y costs ₹120 a guest and holds up to 500. Which statement is correct?
Solution
Hall Y costs more than ₹50,000 only above 50,000 ÷ 120 ≈ 417 guests. Hall X holds at most 300, and at 300 guests Hall Y costs ₹36,000. So whenever Hall X can be used, Hall Y is cheaper.
Answer: (E) Hall Y is cheaper for any number of guests that Hall X can hold
