HCLTech online test pattern for freshers: four sections in 60 minutes

HCLTech's fresher hiring for engineers starts with an online test of four sections, 15 questions each, 15 minutes each: Quantitative Aptitude, Logical Reasoning, Verbal Ability and Technical. Students report no negative marking but a cut-off in every section, so one weak section can stop you even with a good total. Clearing the test leads to a technical interview and an HR interview.

Companies do not publish an official, fixed test pattern, and it can change from drive to drive. The pattern below is the one reported by students in recent drives. Your test invitation is the final word.

Reported pattern

SectionQuestionsTime
Quantitative Aptitude1515 minutes
Logical Reasoning1515 minutes
Verbal Ability1515 minutes
Technical1515 minutes

Each section has its own clock; time does not carry over. Some drives add a short General Knowledge section.

What to prepare

  • Quant: percentages, ratio, averages, speed, work, profit and loss, simple and compound interest.
  • Reasoning: series, coding-decoding, blood relations, directions and arrangements.
  • Verbal: grammar, synonyms and antonyms, sentence completion and reading comprehension.
  • Technical: computer science basics and predicting the output of short C, C++ or Java code, plus OS, DBMS and networking fundamentals.

With one minute per question in every section, practise in sets of 15 questions with a 15-minute timer.

Interviews

  • Technical (30 to 45 minutes): programming fundamentals, data structures, OS, DBMS and often a small live coding problem.
  • HR (20 to 30 minutes): career goals, relocation and communication.

Eligibility (commonly reported, B.E./B.Tech track)

At least 60% in Class 10, Class 12 and the engineering degree, and no active backlogs at the time of the interview. Confirm in your drive notice.

HCLTech also runs TechBee, a separate early-career programme for students right after Class 12. That is a different process from the engineering fresher test described here.
