Cognizant GenC test pattern: communication, aptitude and coding

Cognizant hires freshers through its GenC programme (with GenC Next and other higher tracks for stronger coders). Students report a communication test, an aptitude test and a technical round with coding and SQL, followed by interviews. There is no negative marking, according to recent test-takers.

Companies do not publish an official, fixed test pattern, and it can change from drive to drive. The pattern below is the one reported by students in recent drives. Your test invitation is the final word.

Reported pattern

RoundQuestionsTime
Communication (spoken and written English)about 60about 58 minutes
Aptitude: Numerical Ability2535 minutes
Aptitude: Logical Reasoning3545 minutes
Aptitude: Verbal Ability2020 minutes
Technical (coding and SQL)3105 to 120 minutes

The communication test is reported as an elimination round. It includes reading sentences aloud, repeating sentences, arranging jumbled sentences, answering short questions and telling a short story.

Technical round clusters

Students report two clusters; Cognizant decides which one you get:

  • Java cluster: Java programming (arrays, sorting, exceptions, OOP), SQL queries, and basic web UI (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
  • Python cluster: Python programming (data structures, functions, OOP, files), SQL queries and cloud basics.

SQL appears in both, so practise SELECT with JOIN, GROUP BY, HAVING and subqueries until they are easy.

How to prepare

  1. Communication: speak English aloud daily; record yourself reading a news paragraph and listen back for clarity.
  2. Aptitude: numerical topics (percentages, ratio, speed, work, interest), reasoning (arrangements, series, coding-decoding) and verbal (grammar and reading).
  3. Coding: one language in depth, two problems a day; plus 10 SQL queries a day for two weeks.

Interviews

Technical questions on your chosen language, OOP, SQL and your project; HR questions on relocation, shifts and teamwork. Roles are offered based on interview performance.

Frequently asked questions

Is there negative marking in the Cognizant test?

Recent test-takers report none.

Which coding language should I choose?

The language of the cluster you are given: Java or Python. Being comfortable in one and knowing SQL well covers most of the technical round.

Is the communication test important?

Yes. It is reported as an elimination round, so prepare spoken English seriously.
