A data set has mean 47 and standard deviation 12. Each value x is changed to 2x − 7. Find the new mean.
Under y = ax + b, the mean becomes a × mean + b.
New mean = 2 × 47 − 7 = 87.

How many integers are in the domain of f(x) = √(5 − |x|) + 1/√(x + 1)?
√(5 − |x|) needs |x| ≤ 5, that is −5 ≤ x ≤ 5.
1/√(x + 1) needs x + 1 > 0, that is x > −1.
Together: −1 < x ≤ 5, which holds for 6 integers.
What is the value of log3 5 × log5 13 × log13 81?
Write each log with a common base: logp q = log q / log p.
The product is (log 5 / log 3) × (log 13 / log 5) × (log 81 / log 13) = log 81 / log 3.
That is log3 81 = 4.
Find the radius of the circle x2 + y2 + 12x − 12y + 47 = 0.

In what ratio must rice at Rs. 56/kg be mixed with rice at Rs. 85/kg so that the mixture costs Rs. 64/kg?
By alligation: cheaper : dearer = (dearer − mean) : (mean − cheaper).
= (85 − 64) : (64 − 56) = 21 : 8 = 21 : 8.
The digits of a two-digit number add up to 7. Reversing the digits gives a number 27 less than the original. Find the number.
Let the number be 10a + b. Reversing changes it by 9(a − b), so |a − b| = 3.
The reversed number is smaller, so the tens digit is the greater one: a − b = 3.
With a + b = 7: a = 5, b = 2. The number is 52.
Of 80 students, 64 like cricket and 67 like football. What is the greatest possible number who like both?

Given log 3 = 0.4771 (logs to base 10), how many digits does 347 have?
log 347 = 47 × log 3 = 47 × 0.4771 = 22.4237.
A number whose log has integer part k has k + 1 digits.
The integer part is 22, so 347 has 23 digits.
For what value of k are the points (0, 3), (6, 3) and (4, k) collinear?
Slope through the first two points = 0.
The third point must have the same slope from (0, 3): (k − 3)/(4 − 0) = 0.
k = 3.
What is the largest number that divides 481, 745 and 1306 leaving the same remainder in each case?
If each leaves remainder r, the divisor divides every difference.
Differences: 264 and 561; their HCF is 33.
So the answer is 33 (the common remainder is 19).
Two numbers are in the ratio 8 : 3. If 3 is added to each, the ratio becomes 5 : 2. Find the larger number.
Let the numbers be 8k and 3k: (8k + 3)/(3k + 3) = 52.
Solving: k = 9.
The numbers are 72 and 27; the larger is 72.
√(10 + 2√21) equals
Look for x + y = 10 and xy = 21.
x = 3 and y = 7 work, since (√3 + √7)2 = 3 + 7 + 2√21.
So the value is √3 + √7.
At compound interest, a sum becomes 3 times itself in 5 years. In how many years will it become 9 times itself?
Each period of 5 years multiplies the sum by 3.
9 = 32, so it takes 2 × 5 = 10 years.
The digits of a two-digit number add up to 15. Reversing the digits gives a number 27 more than the original. Find the number.
Let the number be 10a + b. Reversing changes it by 9(a − b), so |a − b| = 3.
The reversed number is larger, so the tens digit is the smaller one: a − b = −3.
With a + b = 15: a = 6, b = 9. The number is 69.
Which set is the solution of (x + 4)(x − 7) / (x − 3) ≤ 0?
The critical points are −4, 3 and 7; x = 3 is excluded (the denominator would be 0).
For x > 7 all three factors are positive, so the expression is positive. The sign alternates across each critical point.
Negative on (3, 7) and on (−∞, −4); zero at x = −4 and x = 7. So x ≤ −4 or 3 < x ≤ 7.
In a survey of 106 people, 47 read paper A, 47 read B and 31 read C; 18 read A and B, 11 read B and C, 15 read C and A, and 8 read all three. How many read exactly two papers?
n(A ∪ B ∪ C) = 47 + 47 + 31 − 18 − 11 − 15 + 8 = 89.
Exactly two = Σ(pairs) − 3(all three) = 44 − 24 = 20.

Coral reefs cover a tiny fraction of the ocean floor but support around a quarter of all known marine species. A reef is built by small animals called coral polyps, which live in partnership with algae. The algae live inside the coral's tissue and, through photosynthesis, supply most of its food. They also give many corals their colour.
This partnership is sensitive to temperature. When the water stays even one or two degrees above its usual summer maximum for several weeks, the corals expel the algae. Without them, the corals turn white, an event known as bleaching. Bleached corals are not dead, and they can recover if temperatures fall soon enough. But if the heat lasts, they starve.
Bleaching events have become more frequent as the oceans have warmed. Some scientists are breeding corals that tolerate heat better, and others are studying reefs that have survived unusually warm water. These efforts may buy time, but most researchers agree that the long-term survival of reefs depends on limiting the rise in ocean temperatures.
Questions 25–29 are based on this passage.
What do the algae provide to the corals?
The first paragraph says the algae supply most of the coral's food and give it colour.
What is 'bleaching'?
Defined in the second paragraph.
Which statement is supported by the passage?
The passage says bleached corals are not dead and can recover if temperatures fall soon enough.
According to most researchers, the long-term survival of reefs depends mainly on
The last sentence states this; the other efforts 'may buy time'.
The phrase 'buy time' in the last paragraph means
Efforts that buy time postpone harm without solving the underlying problem.
Organisations often respond to a mistake by writing a new rule. A customer is treated badly, so a script is written for every call; an expense is misused, so every purchase needs three signatures. Each rule makes sense on its own. Over time, however, the rules pile up, and employees spend more effort following procedures than serving the purpose behind them.
Rules have real strengths. They are predictable, they protect against favouritism, and they allow large organisations to act consistently. But no set of rules can foresee every situation. When something unexpected happens, an employee bound by a script may know exactly what to say and still be unable to help.
The alternative is not to abolish rules but to leave room for judgement. Some companies give front-line staff a small budget they may spend, without approval, to solve a customer's problem. Such trust carries risks, but it also signals that the organisation values thinking, not just compliance. The challenge for managers is to decide where consistency matters most and where flexibility serves people better.
Questions 30–34 are based on this passage.
What is the writer's central argument?
The third paragraph says the answer is not to abolish rules but to leave room for judgement.
Which of these is given as a strength of rules?
The second paragraph lists predictability, protection against favouritism and consistency.
The example of the small budget for front-line staff illustrates
It shows the organisation giving staff freedom to solve problems.
What problem does the writer see in adding a rule after every mistake?
The first paragraph describes this build-up.
The word 'compliance' in the third paragraph means
Compliance is acting according to rules or instructions.
